Strauss draws in these three paragraphs upon Discourses I, Proemio; II, 2 and III, 1 consecutively, of which he says that they are “the three passages explicitly dealing with the essence of Christianity” (176). The essence of Christianity is a formulation that Strauss introduces into the discussion.
